What we make
charadesgame.app is the site behind our version of charades. The product is a team party game: one player acts out the prompt on screen with no talking while their team races a countdown to guess it, a point per correct answer, highest total after all rounds wins.
We are not an app-store publisher and there is nothing to download. The game is the website. That keeps load times short, works on phones and laptops alike, and avoids an account wall. Settings and records live in local browser storage on your device.
If you are comparing this to another charades site, this page only speaks for charadesgame.app. The rules, scoring, timer options, and categories described in our how-to-play guide and FAQ match this exact build.
Our story
Charades has one of the longest histories of any game people still play at parties. We treat that as a responsibility to get the rules right and the friction as close to zero as we can.
Charades began in 18th-century France as a written literary puzzle — a riddle in verse where each stanza hinted at a syllable of the answer. It crossed the Channel and became a popular spoken parlour amusement in Georgian and Victorian Britain.
Through the 1800s the silent, performed version took over — sometimes just called “the game” or “acting charades”. It became a fixture of house parties, then a staple of mid-century radio and television panel shows, which fixed the modern rules: teams, a timer, and mimed clues with no talking.
charadesgame.app is an independent, modern implementation of that acted game. The rules are unchanged; what is new is a clean single-screen layout that fits a phone, a countdown ring and automatic scoreboard so nobody argues about the tally, synthesized sound with a real mute, and 15 word categories you mix yourself.
What we stand for
Open the page, pick a few categories, and tap start. No account wall, no download, no splash video — the first team is ready before you finish reading this sentence.
Sixty-second rounds, no pass penalty, every category free. Nothing is gated behind a "pro" toggle and nothing nags you to install an app.
Matches played, total correct guesses, best round, and best match score live on your device. We do not hold your record hostage behind a login, because there is no login.
The whole game is free forever. No locked categories, no interstitial video ads between rounds, no surprise paywall on the timer.
Who it is for
charadesgame.app is a family-friendly, in-person game with no chat and no store. A poor fit if you want to play remotely with strangers; a good fit if you have a room of people and one phone.
Charades shines with two teams of two-plus. It works at a dinner table, a classroom, a road trip rest stop, or a living room — anywhere people can see one screen.
Add the For Kids, Easy, and Animals categories and a 90-second round and the game is fair for a seven-year-old and a grandparent in the same team.
One device passes around the room. That is a deliberate trade: instant play and real privacy, with nothing to set up and nothing to sync.
Why this site
There are plenty of charades word generators online. This one exists to ship a single honest, fast version — correct rules, a real scoreboard, categories you control, and no clutter.
The countdown, the per-round tally, the team handoffs, and the final standings are all automatic. You act and guess; the game keeps the book.
Fifteen sets — difficulty tiers plus themes like Movies, Jobs, Food, and Emotions — that you mix into one shuffled deck. No single fixed word list.
No auto-playing video, no fake “download our app” banners, no dark patterns around the settings. The how-to-play guide and FAQ describe this exact game, not a generic write-up.
How we build
The game runs entirely on the web: fast loads, tap / swipe / keyboard controls, and settings that stay local unless you clear your browser data. We use lightweight analytics to see what helps players — never to gate the game behind a profile. The game on the home page is the one described on our rules pages, so search results and the live game never drift apart.
Phone, tablet, and laptop share one layout. Tap the card on a touchscreen, swipe up to pass, or use the keyboard shortcuts for correct, pass, mute, and ending a turn.
Matches played, total correct guesses, best single round, and best match score are stored locally. You own the continuity of your record without signing up.
We watch aggregate usage through Google Analytics to improve pacing and polish. Details are in our Privacy Policy — never as a sales pitch.
